The Vienna Biocenter (VBC) PhD Programme in Life Sciences has been successfully running since 1993, providing students from all over the world with exceptional training. As a student at the VBC PhD Programme you will be supervised by a top scientist and have full access to state-of-the-art facilities, thus giving you an opportunity to launch a successful scientific career.

The Vienna Biocenter Campus is extremely dynamic and highly multidisciplinary with research areas ranging from molecules to populations.

The degree will be awarded by the University of Vienna or by the Medical University of Vienna.

Application process
The Vienna Biocenter PhD programme application process is divided into two parts. Only online applications will be accepted.

Part 1: Online application STEP 1 and STEP 2

Application form STEP 1 requires:

• Personal information
• Names and addresses of at least two referees

Please complete the STEP 1 form early enough to give your referees enough time to submit the letter of recommendation! You will then receive an e-mail with a URL address. Please keep this address safe. You can use it to complete the STEP 2 form during the application process. Furthermore, you will be able to follow the current status of your application.

Application form STEP 2 requires:

• File upload (Master's degree, Bachelor's degree, academic transcript etc.) - PDF-format!
• Education specifications

Required qualifications:
Applicants must hold, or anticipate receiving before enrolment, a university degree that would formally qualify them to enter a PhD or equivalent programme in the country where the degree was obtained.

Only .pdf files are allowed!

Applicants admitted to the programme will have to register with the University of Vienna.

Assessment and selection procedure
Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their application and the letters of recommendation. Short-listed candidates will be invited for a five-day interview procedure in Vienna. We will reimburse round trip travel expenses and provide free accommodation.


Summer Deadline – 30 April each year
Interview Dates – first week of July

Winter Deadline – 15 November each year
Interview Dates – last week of January

Students will be hired by the Research Institute where there supervisor is based with a full-employment contract (up to 4 years).

The salaries offered to VBC students are among the highest for PhD Programmes in Europe, around €29,638 (gross), per year (i.e. €22,468 net) - per month €2,117 (net €1,605) – paid 14 times per year.
