Vacancy
PhD Student (AIO)
Department: Pathology , cluster V

Job description:

The department of Pathology, at the VUmc, takes care of the diagnostic of cells, tissues and body fluids originated from patients. In parallel, the department is involved in research in the field of oncology. Within this dynamic environment, the Tumor Profiling unit carries out several research projects on colon and gastric cancer. This unit comprises a team of young enthusiastic researchers who work on different aspects of gastrointestinal cancer, frequently in collaboration with other departments. Detailed information on the ongoing research can be found at www.tumorprofiling.org. This research takes place within the framework of the VUmc-Institute for Cancer and Immunology. The lab facilities are located within the Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCA) at the VU University Medical Center.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer death in the Western world with over 4400 death per year in the Netherlands. Secondary prevention is the most realistic approach for reducing this high number of CRC deaths, and much research is ongoing to develop new molecular tests for cancer. The PhD student on the present project will work on Dutch Cancer Society funded project that aims to develop such a test for a specific category of colorectal tumors, i.e. flat lesions, by extending earlier studies in our lab. To do so, different molecular biology techniques will be applied.
The findings will be documented in peer reviewed scientific journals and at the end of the 4- year period compiled in a PhD thesis.

Requirements:
University degree.
The applicant should be an enthusiastic young scientist with a master degree and experience in molecular biology techniques and data analysis. He or she should be interested in molecular and cell biology and translational research in health sciences. The candidate should be self standing as well as team player, willing to work within an international
environment. Furthermore, good communication skills and high English level (spoken/written) are important.
