Research positions at CIBIO (InBIO Associate Laboratory)

Âmbito: Programa Integrado de IC&DT - SAESCTN-PIIC&DT/1/2011

CIBIO (http://cibio.up.pt) is a young and highly dynamic Research Centre located close to Porto, in the north of Portugal, which aims to be an international Centre of Excellence in the fields of Biodiversity and Evolution, offering great opportunities for multidisciplinary and stimulating research. The Centre is part of InBIO, a Portuguese Associate Laboratory, occupies recently-built facilities, and has more than 130 researchers holding a PhD degree, as well as more than 100 MSc and PhD students, and people from many different countries. Researchers are organized in 17 research groups. The working atmosphere is vibrant and enthusiastic, and CIBIO is regularly visited by many scientists from abroad. Porto is a world-heritage town, capital of Port wine, and the Northern region of Portugal provides rich cultural and outdoor activities. The Centre has fully equipped molecular laboratories (multiple PCR rooms, automated sequencers, real-time PCR machines, etc), as well as technicians and administrative staff, and the necessary equipment for fieldwork. Research projects are performed at a global scale. We are now advertising a series of research contracts (http://www.eracareers.pt) and expect to recruit enthusiastic and highly motivated researchers in the areas indicated below. The positions are expected to start by March 1st, 2013. The application period is from 07 a February 21, 2013. Ample possibilities and opportunities for continuation of research are expected to become available in the years to come.

There is, however, no obligation to contract any of the candidates if the requirements are not adequate. According to the Portuguese Constitution, it is stated that the employer actively promotes a policy of equal opportunities between men and women in access to employment and professional development, and avoiding any form of discrimination.

Behavioural Ecology

A research position, renewed each year, is available at CIBIO (http://cibio.up.pt), University of Porto, Portugal, for the Behavioural Ecology Group. The candidate should have a solid research background in animal behavioural ecology, with autonomous research and publishing experience in the area. The main research areas developed in the behavioural ecology group are related to sexual selection and evolution of signals in birds, and fish, cooperative breeding in birds, sexual selection in islands, and functional aspects of animal personality. The candidate is expected to integrate within these research areas and be capable of developing positive interactions with the resident researchers of the Behavioural Ecology group. The candidate should have a PhD in biology, preferably a minimum of 3 years as Post-doc and a curriculum vitae proving solid knowledge in behavioural ecology. The candidate should additionally have a significant publication record in SCI journals. Experience in teaching in this field and of supervision of academic theses will also be considered valuable. The candidate is expected to build positive research interactions with the resident researchers, both in Vairão and Coimbra, to establish international collaborations, and be capable of attracting national and international funding. The candidate should be a good communicator and be fluent in English, and could be invited to participate in teaching at the MSc and PhD levels. The ranking of candidates will result from a global appreciation of the Curriculum vitae, possibly followed by a job interview. Salary will correspond approximately to a gross annual income of 45.000 € (before taxes).

Human Evolutionary Genetics

We are now advertising a research position, renewed each year, in the area of human evolutionary genetics. The group interests cover different research topics related to the evolutionary history of human genes and populations, using genome-wide sequencing and SNP data. A strong focus will be devoted to the demographic history of African populations, in particular to southern Angolan groups that are pivotal to understand the peopling of southern Africa. A particular emphasis will be given to the analysis of spatial patterns of genetic variation. As an additional topic, the work on southern Angola will include the analysis of the genetic diversity of cattle and sheep breeds held by peoples relying on farming and herding to different extends. The candidate is expected to have an interdisciplinary attitude, more oriented towards research topics and data analysis than to lab techniques and data generation. Accordingly, he/she is expected to have a sound knowledge of population genetics theory and master different kinds of data analysis software currently available to interpret human population genetic data. Additional computer programing skills will be considered an advantage. Applicants should have a PhD degree, preferably a minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral experience, and a significant publication record in SCI journals. Fluency in English speaking and writing is additionally required. As the candidate will be invited to participate in teaching at the MSc and PhD levels, a history of lecturing will be considered valuable. The candidate is expected to establish solid collaborations, and be able to attract national and international funding. Candidates will be assessed initially on their CV, possibly followed by a job interview. Salary corresponds approximately to a gross annual income of 45000 euros (before taxes).

Plant Evolution

A research position, renewed each year, is available at CIBIO (http://cibio.up.pt), University of Porto, Portugal, for the Plant Evolution Group. The candidate should have a solid research background in plant evolutionary genetics, with autonomous research and publishing experience in the area. Candidates should have a solid research background in the interface between population genetics/genomics, phylogeography and conservation biology, as well as experience in fieldwork. They should master molecular biology techniques including genotyping (microsatellites) and sequencing, preferably using both Sanger and Next Generation Sequencing procedures, and be familiar with multiple and commonly used population genetics software tools. Projects can include a variety of species, both model and non-model organisms. Candidates should have a PhD in biology, preferably a minimum of 3 years as Post-doc and a Curriculum vitae proving solid knowledge in the field. They should additionally have a significant publication record in SCI journals in the above-mentioned topics and supervised or co-supervised academic theses (both MSc and PhD). They are expected to build positive research interactions with the resident researchers, to establish international collaborations, and be capable of attracting national and international funding. They should be good communicators and be fluent in English, and could be invited to participate in teaching at the MSc and PhD levels. The ranking of candidates will result from a global appreciation of the Curriculum vitae, possibly followed by a job interview. Salary will correspond approximately to a gross annual income of 45.000 € (before taxes).

Microbial Diversity and Evolution

A research position, renewed each year, is available at CIBIO (http://cibio.up.pt), University of Porto, Portugal, for the Microbial Diversity and Evolution group, which aim to foster basic and applied research focused on microbial diversity and evolution. The groups’ medium-term challenges lying ahead are: i) to develop culture-independent methods to detect/identify and genotyping bacteria directly from environmental samples, ii) to conciliate in a single procedure the specificity of genomic markers used in DNA-based detection assays with the clonal resolution of genotyping through Multi Locus Sequence Typing (MLST) and Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) of highly discriminatory taxa-specific markers, iii) to continue the research on the inclusion of phylogenetic data into the selection workflow of taxa-specific markers; this information should assist in the selection of the most promising diagnostics markers, i.e. the ones that correspond to a conserved genomic region within a particular taxa but also reveal a larger distance to the most closely related sequences in other taxa, iv) to perform genome data mining of niche-specific bacterial communities using comparative genomics tools and phylogenetic analysis to infer genomic footprints of bacterial ecotypes.
