DOCTORAL and POST-DOCTORAL Fellow Positions
are open at the Cell Cycle and Cancer Reaseach Group, Dep. Biomedical Sciences and Medicine, University of Algarve.
In our group we examine the components and regulatory mechanisms of the mitotic machinary, and explore mechanisms by which chromosome missegregation can lead to cancer. We have been focusing our attention in two different aspects of mitosis: chromosome attachment to the spindle (function of kinetochore proteins) and completion of cell division (execution of cytokinesis). Through a combination of biochemical, genetic and cytologic techniques, and taking advantage of Drosophila genetics and human tissue cultured cells, we have identified a set of new genes that when mutated result in chromosome missegregation, spindle assembly defects and cytokinesis failure (for examples see: Cell Cycle (2008) 7:2529 – 2534; J. Cell Biology (2009) 184:647-657; J. Cell Sci (2012) 125: 516-527; J Cell Sci 2012, Advance Online Publication March 27, jcs.097147)
We are looking for ambitious, highly motivated candidates that want to pursue a career in science, holders of an MSc or PhD degree in Molecular/Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Chemistry or related disciplines. The projects involve international collaborations. No previous research experience in the field is required, altought it may be an advantage.
The duration of the position is dependent on the fellowship type (post-doc: 3-6 yrs, doctoral: 4 yrs), and the salary is indexed to FCT (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.pt). The selected candidates are required to apply for a 2012 FCT doctoral or post-doctoral fellowship (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/), that have a predicted starting date of January 2013.
For application send, before June 15th 2012, an email containing a CV, motivation letter and two recommendation letters to Álvaro Tavares (aatavares@ualg.pt). Candidates should indicate availability for a personal/telephone interview.
