TITLE OF POST: Research Assistant in Membrane Protein Structural and Functional Biology

SALARY SCALE: Research Assistant - €23,015 - €37,257 p.a.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates will have a high-level honors degree in biochemistry, biological sciences, biophysics, biotechnology, chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, or a related discipline. A Masters is desirable.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
A Research Assistantship position is available immediately in the Membrane Structural and Functional Biology (MSFB) Group at the University of Limerick, Ireland, for work on proteins involved in biofilm production and quorum sensing in Pseudomonas. The Research Assisant will provide laboratory support to postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers in the MSFB Group on all aspects of the cloning, production, purification and crystallization of membrane proteins (mostly) from prokaryotes. Appropriate training will be provided.

DESCRIPTION:
The University of Limerick has a strategic commitment to the area of structural biology with a particular emphasis on cellular membranes and on structure determination by crystallographic and spectroscopic means in the area of Membrane Structural and Functional Biology. The University of Limerick supports a world-class research and resources and will enhance the Irish economy in a sustainable way by contributing to the knowledge base in membrane biology, drug discovery and sensor development.

Membrane Structural and Functional Biology at the University of Limerick has two core themes, proteins and lipids. The protein core is concerned with structure-function studies of systems that reflect the interests of the individual investigators. On the lipid side, the emphasis is on de novo organic synthesis, purification and characterization of lipids and related amphiphiles for use in crystallization and reconstitution/functional studies of membrane proteins. A Research Assistantship position is available immediately for work on proteins involved in biofilm production and quorum sensing in Pseudomonas. The RA will provide laboratory support to postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers in the MSFB Group on all aspects of the cloning, production, purification and crystallization of membrane proteins (mostly) from prokaryotes. Appropriate training will be provided.

The successful candidate will have a high-level honors degree in biochemistry, biological sciences, biophysics, biotechnology, chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, or a related discipline. A Masters is desirable.

The candidate must show evidence of the capability of performing laboratory-based molecular biology and cell mass and protein production and separation skills, of working both independently and as part of a team, and of good communication and interpersonal skills. The candidate must be an organized, motivated self-starter who pays attention to detail and must be able to achieve results on time and on target. Having skills in separation technologies, such as HPLC, gel filtration, affinity chromatography, SDS-PAGE, and centrifugation is desirable.
Group projects are funded by Science Foundation Ireland and the USA National Institutes of Health

Implementation and refinement of established methodologies for synthesizing, purifying and characterizing lipids and detergents for use in biomembrane structural and functional biology.
