PhD Scholarship: Kiwifruit Root Physiology

A PhD scholarship is available through HortResearch, and Zespri Group Ltd for enrolment through a New Zealand University to study on the physiology of root function in kiwifruit. The work will contribute to a wider research programme on orchard technologies to enhance the taste of ZESPRI™ GREEN and ZESPRI™ GOLD kiwifruit. The scope of the PhD study will be to examine the influences of horticultural practices on root function in Actinidia (kiwifruit) species.

The scholarship, including stipend, university fees and operating costs is available for a three year period. It is provided by global kiwifruit marketer ZESPRI Group Ltd and leading fruit research company HortResearch (The Horticulture and Food Research Institute of New Zealand). The successful applicant will based mainly at HortResearch’s Te Puke Research Centre and will work closely with HortResearch’s kiwifruit physiology team. The PhD project will be supervised by Drs Mike Clearwater and Kevin Patterson of HortResearch plus an appropriate university supervisor.

HortResearch’s Te Puke Research Centre is located in the Bay of Plenty in the heart of New Zealand’s vibrant kiwifruit industry. HortResearch staff have strong links with all sectors of this leading fruit growing industry and with the scientific community internationally.

Selection and eligibility criteria

The scholarship is open to candidates who are eligible for enrolment for the degree of PhD at a New Zealand university. Preference will be given to applicants who have a background in plant physiology or horticultural science, have demonstrated potential to contribute to the field of plant science, and have an excellent track record of academic achievement.
