The Psycho-oncology Co-operative Research Group (PoCoG), within the University of Sydney ’s School of Psychology , is dedicated to conducting large-scale, multi-centre psycho-oncology and supportive care research. PoCoG brings together extensive skills and experience in psychosocial oncology to conduct leading research to improve outcomes for all cancer patients, their families and carers.

Project Manager - Quality of Life Office

Our recently established Quality of Life Office aims to conduct research in cancer quality of life and provide a resource centre. As a Project Manager, you will develop and coordinate the Quality of Life Office, creating networks within the oncology community and managing resources. This is an outstanding opportunity to develop expertise in Quality of Life, and contribute to improved outcomes for cancer patients in Australia .
A strong communicator, you will establish and foster working relationships with cancer clinical trials groups, and provide expert advice to PoCoG members, researchers and oncology health professionals regarding the use of quality of life measures and relevant resources. Furthermore, you will work collaboratively to develop research proposals and protocols, prepare research grant applications, and contribute to the implementation and management of quality of life studies.
This position is suited to a highly skilled and motivated individual with postgraduate qualifications in psychology, public health, behavioural or social science or similar discipline or equivalent professional experience. You will need to have relevant experience in the management of complex research projects, and the ability to determine priorities, work under pressure and meet deadlines. Superior interpersonal skills relevant to liaising with key stakeholders will also be crucial.
The position is full-time fixed term until 30 June 2008 subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. There may be further offers of employment subject to funding and need. Candidates interested in part-time appointments will also be considered. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.
Remuneration package: up to $80,849 - $91,182 p.a. (which includes a base salary Level 8 $68,319 - $77,050 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation)

Project Manager - Research Projects Office

We are seeking a highly motivated and results-driven Project Manager to establish the PoCoG Research Projects Office. Your core focus will be to build an Office that will generate new research ideas and expand PoCoG’s research agenda within psychosocial oncology and supportive care in cancer. This role presents an outstanding opportunity to work with teams of researchers and clinicians, enable leading research, and make a significant impact on the better health and wellbeing of cancer patients.
As Project Manager, your will be responsible for generating and developing research proposals and protocols, and strategically collaborating with PoCoG members, researchers, clinicians and oncology health professionals to identify clinical issues of relevance to cancer patients, their families and carers. In addition, you will seek out opportunities to undertake innovative, large-scale, multi-centre psycho-oncology and supportive care research, and build networks with national and international researchers.
In this role, it will be crucial that you have a broad range of skills and expertise in health research principles and design and project development and management. You must also be a strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with a wide range of key stakeholders. Relevant experience in developing a program of research will be essential, as will the ability to determine priorities, work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Project Assistant
PoCoG / Medical Psychology Research Unit
School of Psychology
The Medical Psychology Research Unit (MPRU) has built an international reputation in psycho-oncology research, particularly doctor-patient communication, over the past 15 years. The MPRU is cross-disciplinary, and includes staff and students from Psychology, Psychiatry, Medicine, Public Health and Nursing backgrounds. The MPRU collaborates with a wide range of clinicians and consumers, and therefore the research it conducts has immediate clinical relevance and has influenced practice in a number of areas. The MPRU has been extremely successful in attracting peer reviewed grant money of approximately $1,000,000 per year and produces an average of 16 peer-reviewed high quality publications per year.
There is an opportunity currently available for a proactive and motivated Project Assistant to aide the effective functioning of the PoCoG Executive Office. Your core focus will be to oversee PoCoG membership services and support the coordination of meetings, workshops and conferences.
This role is suited to a highly organised and attentive individual with good written and verbal communication skills. Your key responsibilities will include supporting the PoCoG staff and regularly liaising with PoCoG members, conducting literature reviews, maintaining databases, drafting ethics applications and reports, taking minutes at meetings, and performing general project administration and office duties. This role will also offer scope to contribute to emerging research and projects within both PoCoG and the MPRU.
To succeed, you will be a recent graduate with honours in psychology, behavioural science, social sciences or a similar discipline, and solid administrative skills. Excellent computer skills in the Microsoft Office suite will be essential, as will your abilities to work according to priorities and deadlines.
