POSTOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP CHEMOINFORMATICS
DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY, NEW UNIVERSITY OF LISBON, PORTUGAL

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral fellow to work in the area of
chemoinformatics within the research group of Prof. Joao Aires-de-Sousa in the Department
of Chemistry at FCT - New University of Lisbon, Portugal. Current projects of the group
are centred around the representation and prediction of chemical/biochemical reactions,
and SPINUS (a neural network system for the prediction of NMR spectra). The group
coordinates ORGLIST - the international organic chemistry mailing list on the Internet.

The successful candidate will be involved in the development of methods for reaction
prediction/classification, and their application to a diversity of fields from
bioinformatics to toxicology. The postdoc will be a member of a highly motivated young
team in a dynamic international department, which has been rated with excellent
classification by independent evaluation panels. The successful candidate should be
prepared to collaborate in international research projects.

The FCT-UNL campus is located in the Tagus river basin, 10 km from Lisbon city center,
and 3 km from the Atlantic Ocean and Caparica beaches. The campus occupies an area of
approximately 30 hectares and hosts 6,000 students, professors and researchers in science
and engineering.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in an area relevant to the project,
experience in chemoinformatics or bioinformatics, good knowledge of organic chemistry or
biochemistry or toxicology, programming skills in Java or C/C++, interests in machine
learning techniques, excellent written English skills, and a good publication record (>
10 publications in peer-reviewed journals). Clearly, the project will allow enhancing
this knowledge and will thus provide the postdoc with good professional opportunities.

The position is for one year with the possible extension up to three years.

Interested individuals should apply with a letter detailing why they are
interested in the project, and a CV including description of past research and work
experiences, as well as a list of references.

Applications should be sent by e-mail to jas@fct.unl.pt
