Research Technician: Cell Biology and Biophysics

Grade: 4, 5 or 6, depending on experience and qualifications

EMBL site: EMBL Heidelberg

Commencing date: As soon as possible after closing date

Job description: The position of Research Technician is at the EMBL Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit in the new research group of Dr Marko Kaksonen. The successful candidate will participate in research projects in cellular trafficking and cytoskeletal function. S/he will design and generate genetically modified yeast strains and use live cell imaging to analyze yeast strains expressing GFP- and RFP-tagged proteins. The work also includes general molecular biology methods and yeast genetics. In addition, S/he will assist in setting up the new laboratory and in the day-to-day running of the lab.

Qualifications and experience: The ideal candidate should have an appropriate university degree or technical school training in molecular biology or in a related field. Expertise in basic methods of molecular biology is required. Previous experience of yeast genetics and advanced methods of fluorescence microscopy would be advantageous but not necessary.

Furthermore, the candidate is self-motivated, has a team-player attitude, good communication skills, and is computer savvy (primarily MS Office applications). Fluency in English is essential.

Contract: An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
