University of Groningen, PhD student position

A position for a PhD student is available at the X-ray crystallography group of the University of Groningen (http://www.xray.chem.rug.nl) to study the structure and function of proteins involved in genetic competence development in Bacillus subtilis. The work will be carried out as part of an existing collaboration with the group of Prof. Oscar Kuipers (Groningen), who is studying the genetics and regulatory aspects of competence development.

Requirements:

The position is open for a foreign (non-Dutch) student with a strong background in protein biochemistry and/or biophysics (MSc degree or equivalent), an aptitude for computing and excellent communication skills. A good command of English (speaking and writing) is required.

Knowledge and/or experience of some of the following areas will be advantageous: recombinant protein expression and purification, protein crystallization, structure determination and molecular modelling. Candidates should have a strong ambition to obtain a PhD degree within 4 years.

Training, as required, will be provided in a well-equipped and supportive environment enabling the successful candidate to extend his/her skills and expertise. The position is part of the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (http://www.gbb.chem.rug.nl), which provides an integrated graduate training program consisting of course work, workshops and multi- disciplinary research. Conditions of employment:

The University of Groningen offers an Ubbo-Emmius stipend, covering standard living expenses, for a period of 4 years to be concluded with a PhD examination. The position should begin as soon as possible, preferably before Nov. 1, 2006.
