PhD Studentship: Involvement of aquaporins in tolerance of soil water deficits in strawberry

East Malling Research, in collaboration with the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the University of Leeds, is offering an exciting opportunity to obtain experience in diverse disciplines within the plant sciences. There is currently much interest in alterations in aquaporin expression during drought. We are seeking a PhD student to investigate the role of aquaporins in drought tolerance in strawberry, using a combination of molecular and physiological techniques.

East Malling Research (EMR) is the principal UK provider of top-class basic, strategic and applied horticultural research and development for the perennial crops sector. EMR builds on a 90-year history and international reputation for innovative research. Scientists at EMR develop new practices and products that support sustainability, while adding to the underpinning knowledge of horticultural crops, their pests, pathogens and growing systems. EMR provides large-scale field research facilities, as well as modern glasshouses and generous access to extensive laboratory equipment. The research centre is located in the scenic Kent countryside, but less than an hour’s journey from London. This studentship also includes short-term training and research at the University of Leeds - one of the largest life-science research centres within the UK. The Faculty of Biological Sciences offers excellent research facilities and a high quality research training environment, in the heart of a vibrant student city.

The studentship comprises a stipend and tuition fees (EU rate).

The successful candidate will have a good honours degree in Plant Sciences or a related discipline and an interest in both whole-plant physiology (particularly plant water relations) and molecular biology.

More information and an application form can be downloaded from http://www.emr.ac.uk/jobs.htm or mail recruitment@emr.ac.uk.

Closing date: 9 June 2006
