Training in methods and devices for non-invasive high resolution optical measurements and imaging [Host Fellowships for Early Stage Research Training (EST)]

Twelve European Union funded Marie Curie PhD fellowships are available, with the aim of improving the diagnostic capabilities of non-invasive methods for tissue imaging. The areas of research are:

* optical coherence tomography (OCT);
* adaptive optics for the eye;
* low coherence interferometry;
* optical scanning;
* sensing;
* optical sources;
* optical devices;
* modeling light propagation through tissues.

More information on these projects is available at cordis or through the cordis search engine.

There will be regular liaison between the academic and industrial partners, across a network formed by the University of Kent (U.K.) , National University of Ireland, Galway and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (Portugal) and two companies: Imagine Eyes (France) and Multiwave Photonics (Portugal).

Imagens OCT The applicants must have a good background in theoretical and experimental optics and expected to have graduated in Physics, Medical Physics or Electronic Engineering. Knowledge of software development and image processing would be advantageous. We are looking for highly imaginative and self-motivated individuals. The majority of fellowships are for candidates residing in the EU member states and states in the accession phase to the EU. Up to 3 positions may be allocated to candidates from outside Europe.

This program is targeted to young researchers, with a maximum of 4 years experience in research. The starting stipend will be a minimum of 2258 euros per month and will be subject to income tax. A generous career development package is also offered, including attending conferences and summer schools with the participation of network partners. The studentships are available from 1 May 2006.

For more information or submissions (send CV), contact Carla Carmelo Rosa ( ccrosa@fc.up.pt , Universidade do Porto, Portugal), or Prof. Adrian Podoleanu ( a.g.h.podoleanu@kent.ac.uk, University of Kent, UK).
