The Position
F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG, a world leader in pharmaceuticals, is committed to invest into innovative drug development. Medicinal chemistry plays a key role as one of the central preclinical research disciplines in the quest for novel structural motifs with suitable drug like properties. We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD level organic chemist for the synthesis of novel organic building blocks for use in medicinal chemistry. In addition, the research program will focus on the exploration of chemical reactions that can be conducted under aqueous conditions. In this position you will be an employee of the University of Aveiro (Portugal) and working for the first 1 year under the guidance of Prof. Hans Peter Wessel (University of Aveiro) and for the second year in the Medicinal Chemistry Department at Roche (Basel). Travel between the two research facilities will be possible.
The successful candidate will:
- have access to modern chemistry synthesis technologies (e.g. flow reactors, LC-MS, preparative HPLC) and is expected to learn, develop and communicate the application of preparative organic synthesis
- maintain a high level of scientific visibility by publishing your results and fostering interactions with groups within Roche and outside the company
- have unique opportunity to gain first-hand insights into the drug discovery process in one of the leading pharmaceutical companies
- This position is part of the Roche post-doctoral fellowship program (RPF) and foresees a 2-year funding with the possibility of extension.
Who you are

You have:
- a PhD in organic chemistry with a demonstrated strong synthetic background
previous experience in carbohydrate chemistry or synthesis automation (HPLC, parallel chemistry) is of advantage but not a requirement.
- excellent self-organization skills, enthusiasm in regard of design, planning, performing and analyzing chemical experiments.
- fluency in English is a must, some knowledge of Portuguese or German would be helpful
outstanding level of motivation, creativity, analytical thinking and good scientific writing skills.
