Job summary:
CESAM offers a contract (4 years and 3 months) for an Assistant Researcher (gross salary ca. 43k€/year) in Marine Biology/Ecology. Applicants must have at least 5 years experience at pos-doc level and a good publication record (they should fulfil the CESAM member rules).

Job description:
CESAM (Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies), a research unit of the University of Aveiro with the status of “Associated Laboratory”, is offering a contract of one year, renewable up to four years, for an Assistant Researcher, with a salary of ca. 43 000 €/year. This vacancy is subjected to posterior approval of FCT- Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.

The post holder will join an existing Research Group at CESAM, within the line Marine Ecosystems and Modelling, and will conduct research in the Marine Biology team on deep-sea studies, ecology of deep sea ecosystems and invertebrate taxonomy. The candidate is expected also to develop cross-disciplinary research collaboration with other CESAM researchers, and should be capable of developing independent research, initiating and managing his/her own projects, although within the strategic areas of the hosting unit/line of study. There are no teaching obligations. The post holder should be able to find a substantial part of his/her research funds through application for research projects to national and international funding agencies and through supervision of PhD students and pos-doc researchers.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Biology, Oceanography, Marine Sciences, or equivalent and, and at least, 5 years of research experience at pos-doc level and a good scientific publication record. Key requirements are excellence in research, capability to develop independent research initiatives and a clear vision of national and international research priorities in Marine Sciences field of expertise.

The successful candidate must be prepared and ready to work both in the laboratory and at sea. The demonstration of high-standard research in deep-sea biodiversity and/or ecology, a strong background in invertebrate taxonomy and trophic and reproductive ecology, previous participation in research cruises, expertise in molecular approaches and analysis and interpretation of ecological data, are conditions of preference.

The panel responsible for the selection will be constituted by Amadeu Soares, Vice Director of CESAM, Marina Ribeiro da Cunha, from CESAM and the University of Aveiro (Portugal), João Coimbra, from CIMAR and University of Porto (Portugal) and Frederick Wrona, Professor at the University of Victoria, Canada.
