Main research field: Synthetic organic chemistry
Sub research fields: Heterocyclic compounds // biological applications // catalytic and
asymmetric organic transformations
The University of Aveiro invites applications for a research position (‘Investigador Auxiliar’)
in synthetic organic chemistry. The Researcher will be hosted by the Research Unit Organic
Chemistry; Natural Products and Food Stuffs. The candidates must have a PhD degree
(obtained 3 or more years ago) and relevant post-doctoral research experience in organic
synthesis, preferably complementing by experience on asymmetric synthesis, and metal- and
organo-catalysis.
The University of Aveiro invites applications for a research position (‘Investigador Auxiliar’)
in synthetic organic chemistry. The Researcher will be hosted by the Research Unit Organic
Chemistry; Natural Products and Food Stuffs – QOPNA. Possible research areas include,
among others: Development of new synthetic methods for oxygen and nitrogen heterocyclic
compounds (those of existing research projects at the University of Aveiro); synthesis of
heterocyclic compounds with potential applications as antitumour and antioxidant agents;
asymmetric synthesis and metal-catalysed and organo-catalysed transformations towards
functionalised compounds.
The candidates must have a PhD degree and relevant post-doctoral research experience in
synthetic organic chemistry, preferably in the development of new synthetic methods for
oxygen and nitrogen heterocyclic compounds and in asymmetric and catalytic organic
transformations. Applicants should have a good track of publication in SCI journals and the
ability to pursue an independent research career. The positions are available for 32 months,
with the possibility of renewal. Salary will be ca. 44,500 Euro/year. Some support will be
provided, including access to joint research facilities and laboratory equipment.
The QOPNA Research Unit comprises the activities of three groups of researchers, namely
the organic, mass and food chemists. Such groups have been pursuing their scientific
objectives in synthetic organic chemistry, mass spectrometry studies and food quality,
composition and functionality. The QOPNA Unit includes 34 academic staff and postdoctoral
associates, 35 PhD and 40 MSc students. The candidate will join the Organic Chemistry
Group involved in the research of four main areas: Tetrapyrrolic macrocycles: Design,
synthesis, reactivity and biological applications; Phenolic and quinolone-type compounds:
Design, synthesis, reactivity and biological applications; Organic synthesis and catalysis;
Fullerene compounds and nanomaterials (http://www.ua.pt/dq/PageText.aspx?id=6340).
The application process should include the candidate CV, the names and contact details of 2
referees, and a brief statement of the applicant present and future research interests. The
submission should take place by e-mail (artur.silva@ua.pt) till 20th February, 2011.
