Following the outburst on the Nature editorial suggesting that US should judge historical figures “by their achievements rather than by modern norms” the time has come so academia starts judging academics also by its misconducts and other like flaws rather than only by its productivity achievements. E. Diamandis of the University of Toronto recently authored an interesting paper in which he says that in highly competitive science "there are no Saints" as it happens in highly competitive sports. So since in some Olympic sports like figure skating the rating is based on the number of flaws of the athletes it would be of no surprise if one of these days some colleagues start developing metrics that also measure scientist flaws. Stanford Professor John Ioannidis already suggested a change in the reward system that includes negative points (Table 2). And recently some Colleagues suggested a ‘S-index’ to tackle abuse of self-citations

Of course there are some that have more radical ideas like the German science journalist Leonid Schneider who unfortunately coined the term zombie scientists to classify those blamed (or just suspected) of research misconduct even without the due process of law. This witch hunt like term forgets the content of articles 10 and 11 of the Human Declaration of Human Rights and it is especially worrying for scientists of countries where the social pressure is so high that already led several researchers to suicide, even before a definitely guilty verdict has been reached (Pellegrini, 2017)

Pellegrini, P. A. (2017). Science as a matter of honour: How accused scientists deal with scientific fraud in Japan. Science and Engineering Ethics, 1-17.
