"Times Higher Education is developing a new global university ranking that aims to measure institutions’ success in delivering the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals…The first edition of the ranking will include metrics based on 11 SDGs, but the long-term goal is to measure performance against all 17 goals. Data will be collected from universities and Elsevier to produce an overall ranking of universities based on the best four or five SDGs per university… the first edition will be launched at THE’s Innovation and Impact Summit in South Korea in April 2019."

Its interesting to read on this issue taking into account the content of the 2 emails below

The paper published this week shows that it will take more than than 200 years for women scientists to close the gender gap in the field of physics. Other fields will require just 100 years. Fig. 3 in that paper shows data for different countries. The countries with the best performance are Serbia and Romenia while Saudi Arabia and Japan appears in the bottom of the list. More data appears in the the section Supporting information.

In this context please be so kind to check again the world map about the gender inequality índex in the end of the email below. Of course some have look at it but didn´t saw what´s worth seeing. Its amazing that Europe having a unique position in this issue is worrying in competing in the same track against some of the scoundrels universities of this world forgetting that as the well know Frenchman La Fontaine showed more than 300 years ago that the best way to win a competition is too choose the terms of that same competition http://www.musee-jean-de-la-fontaine.fr ... uk-15.html

Assunto: The scoundrel University

Let´s imagine a rogue country with enough money so its only university could hire several Nobel Prizes winners, several Fields medalists and hundreds of Highly Cited researchers that would be enough to put that university in ARWU top 10. Imagine that such university research involves only science related to development of weapons. Imagine that country has the highest Gini index in the world and also has the worst gender inequality index-GII. Imagine that country does not allow women to vote, has no free press nor freedom of speech and condemns minor crimes like robbery to death penalty. Imagine that country has the highest carbon dioxide emissions per capita in the world and has absolutely zero respect towards environmental values. Imagine also that that the responsible´s of that country are non-officially involved in drug business, sex trafficking, slavery and in the funding of terrorists. Of course imagine also that this country pays millions every year to several marketing agencies so their image in the media is one of a decent country !

The question is not if that country exist. The question is not if such a country would be able to hire such high number of outstanding scientists. The question is if does the ARWU high position of that university makes any sense or has any value whatsoever ? and how much is the development of a country and of its values influenced by its universities ? and if the answer is positive aren´t those worth ranking ? Isn´t Humanity advancement worth more than a Nobel, a Fields medal, hundreds of patents or thousands of SCI papers ?
