Many dictators in the world will love this discovery. They will now try to engage in massive electric stimulation programes to reduce criminality rate. Also anyone who is to be release from prison in those countries will get a electric "stimulation" just in case. Or worst they will receive an implant to be electrically "stimuled" everyday for the rest of their life !!!! No doubt this discovery will save a lot of money to governments because prisons are very expensive. In US the average cost per inmate can go has high as 60.000 USD/year exceeding more than 1 trillion USD per year https://smartasset.com/mortgage/the-eco ... son-system Mr. Trump will also love that great american science. I bet he will give a medal to this team of researchers.

My area is not neuroscience and in fact has little to do with the health area still i believe that the reviewers fail to see the wide implications of this study and worst the Editor-in-Chief has preferred to put the interests of his journal in front of the interests of science. The only way that study could ever be accepted would imply to analyze thousands of people during several years to rule out dozens or even hundreds of other variables not just 81 adults (half of which acted as placebo). I do hope the editor can now face the consequences of the publication of this very preliminary paper. As mentioned below its seems that medical science in USA is entering a dangerous path. Does this path has anything to do with the fact that some believe "academic medicine has been sold to the highest bidder" ? https://medium.com/@drjasonfung/scientific-opinions-for-sale-5b3e7cdec8d9

Assunto: Fulfilling Mengele´s dreams and making Ishii Shiro proud

http://www.foxnews.com/science/2018/04/ ... -body.html

Following the email below it seems that medical research in USA is addicted to bizarre experiments. In the meantime the sleepwalking scientific community is very worried on scientists that make papers with duplicate images or with plagiarized content but its much less worried on these experiments or others like this one https://investigations.peta.org/french- ... l-testing/ If that is the state of the art of ethics in medical research in Western countries we can only imagine what medical tests are now being secretly performed in the countries where human life has little value meaning that if Joseph Mengele and Ishii Shiro were still alive they would be working as highly paid scientists in some secret lab for one of such countries.

Assunto: "the most infamous biomedical research study in U.S."
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a ... 3316301524

In an interesting paper in the link above with the title "Is there a technological fix for the current global stagnation?: A response to Daniele Archibugi, Blade Runner economics: Will innovation lead the economic recovery?"

Bengt-Åke Lundvall of Aalborg University replies to a former and interesting paper also published in the journal Research Policy. On it he mentioned a disgusting experiment that some has termed "the most infamous biomedical research study in U.S." that says much about medicine ethics in some countries and much more about the consequences of inequality, mentioned in the email below.

"The Tuskegee experiment was a notorious medical research project involving hundreds of 600 poor African-American men that took place from 1932 to 1972 in Macon County, Alabama…28 participants had perished from syphilis, 100 more had passed away from related complications, at least 40 spouses had been diagnosed with it and the disease had been passed to 19 children at birth....In 2010, President Barack Obama and other federal officials apologized for another unethical, U.S.-sponsored medical study, conducted decades earlier in Guatemala. In that study, from 1946 to 1948, nearly 700 men and women—prisoners, soldiers, mental patients—were intentionally infected with syphilis (hundreds more people were exposed to other sexually transmitted diseases as part of the study) without their knowledge or consent"

Assunto: Is the research funding distribution in US dictated by Big Pharma lobby ?

Check in the link below the Science and Engineering Indicators NSF - 2018
https://www.nsf.gov/statistics/2018/nsb20181/report

Life sciences received the largest share (57%) of funding, followed by engineering (16%).
Computer sciences, geosciences, mathematical sciences, physical sciences, psychology, and social sciences—together accounted for 20% of academic R&D spending
Education, business, and humanities—accounted for just under 6%
How can this be possible ? Well its not a surprise that in US big pharma has a strong power and easily influences politicians. Big pharma spent around $2.5 billion funding members of Congress. 90% of the House of representatives and 97 of the 100 senators received contributions from pharmaceutical companies seeking changes in the legislation ! https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/oct/19/big-pharma-money-lobbying-us-opioid-crisis

Also interesting is the fact that while most editors do their job in a pro bono manner the editors of medicine journals are payed by the pharmaceutical industry http://www.bmj.com/content/359/bmj.j4619.full Of course since there are no such thing as free lunches the big pharma industry do not make the payments without expecting some compensations in return. The words of Arnold S. Relman below make more sense in this context.

What is a known fact is that statistics show that fabrication and falsification took place mostly on papers from health science related areas. A Scopus search shows that for a sample of 6560 retracted papers published since 2008 60% are from Medicine although this area was only responsible for 16% of all papers produced in that period. Do they have more pressure to publish than other areas ? That´s not easy to prove but what is easy to prove is that health related areas have more money than any other area. Unfortunately big pharma is more concerned with commercial applications than in trying to solve some of the worrying world health problems. As Bill Gates point out in a Global Grand Challenges Summit "more research money was being spent on a cure for male pattern baldness than on a cure for malaria"

Therefore, its very easy to understand the statement below:

“The academic institutions of this country are allowing themselves to be the paid agents of the pharmaceutical industry. I think it’s disgraceful.”
By Arnold S. Relman (1923-2014), Harvard Professor of Medicine and Former Editor-in-Chief of the New England Medical Journal (that has the highest impact factor among medical journals)
