The link above shows that the class on ‘science of positive psychology’ has become the most popular course in the University of Yale. More details below:

The Rationale: During its first century, psychology justifiably focused most of its attention on human suffering. Marked progress as been made in understanding and treating numerous psychological disorders - depression, anxiety, and phobias, to name a few. While alleviating suffering, however, psychology has not paid much attention to what makes life most worth living. Positive Psychology is founded on the belief that people want more than an end to suffering. People want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play. We have the opportunity to create a science and a profession that not only heals psychological damage but also builds strengths to enable people to achieve the best things in life. The Three Pillars: Positive Psychology has three central concerns: positive experiences, positive individual traits, and positive institutions. Understanding positive emotions entails the study of contentment with the past, happiness in the present, and hope for the future. Understanding positive individual traits involves the study of strengths, such as the capacity for love and work, courage, compassion, resilience, creativity, curiosity, integrity, self-knowledge, moderation, self-control, and wisdom. Understanding positive institutions entails the study of the strengths that foster better communities, such as justice, responsibility, civility, parenting, nurturance, work ethic, leadership, teamwork, purpose, and tolerance.

If the capitalism motto is to give consumers what they want why are universities in capitalist countries so afraid to give students what they want only because they are so convinced that their past practices are exactly what students will need in the future ?

Why are we all so afraid to give credit to the ideas of Alain de Botton on the fact that Universities must start to worry on how to help people to find meaning for their lives in a jobless future ?

And how many humanity electives should engineering degrees have ? None ? 1, 5, 10 ?

Assunto: The mission of universities and the CIA ranking on the Gini index

In the email below Harvard graduate Naomi Schaefer Riley stated that its not the universities mission (at least private ones) to remake the social structure of countries. I could understand Naomi S. Riley position if she was from Finland that according to a CIA ranking (that can be considered a reliable source and not fake news) has the lowest Gini index between 150 countries but not when she comes from a country that in the same ranking is located between Mozambique and the Cameroon !

With a very different position and in a very insightful podcast (link below) Alain de Botton says that universities should teach us how to live, he speaks about the need of classes about facing illness, about being alone, about reconnecting with nature, he suggests departments for relationships, centers for self-knowledge or even an Institute on Dying etc etc.

Are these just plain stupid ideas without any academic value whatsoever ?
Are universities mission just to be businesses as Naomi S. Riley and others like her believe ?
