In the last decade the number of vegetarian/vegan in many Western countries have increased around 40% a year. Still the average meat consumption per capita in Western countries is 10-20 times higher than in many countries like India. The increased in the number of vegetarian/vegan was due mainly to women and young people. Fortunately others not so young like the 75 years old Martin Rees, already wrote that diet changes are crucial for the sustainability of the human specie. And if the good news is that India, that soon will surpass China as the most populous nation, has around 30% of vegetarians the bad news is that worldwide meat consumption will keep on rising, in the last 40 years it has increased 300%. This means that antibiotic production will also rise because 80% of all antibiotics produced by big pharma are to be used in animal food. This in turn maybe the cause for the appearance of superbugs resistant to antibiotics as it was mentioned in an article published last week on Science:

Strangely as it seems the only "intelligent" solution that universities have to offer to society in order to solve this problem is....to study the development of new antibiotics serving the profitable agenda of big pharma ! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/09/24/need-billion-pound-prize-fund-kick-start-quest-new-antibiotics/

No wonder that some colleagues wrote that academics are now just nothing more than car salesmen:
If we allow the scope of academic research to continue to be narrowed to fit the wants of industries and politicians, what we will have is a nation built on narrowly focused, relatively unsustainable, wasteful, even dangerous policy…faculty members are not cloistered scholars but car salesmen judged primarily by our monthly sales, i.e., external funding…Add to this money-centered, corporatized system the decimation of tenure, and what you end up with is an industrialized machine in which the risk managers take maximal advantage of our job insecurity”
