The bullying and subsequent suicide of a talented Ivy League scientist exposes ugly truths about the cruelty and dysfunction at the heart of academic science https://www.timeshighereducation.com/features/poisonous-science-dark-side-lab

E. Diamandis already knew it when he recently wrote that "there are no Saints" on competitive science and about the "myriad of horror stories of alleged dishonesty in top science". http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0009912017301972
Speaking about suicides in academia recently a young researcher used the Acknowledgements of his paper published on The European Physical Journal C https://link.springer.com/article/10.1140/epjc/s10052-017-5049-5 to make a few critiques about the post-doctoral system that he believes was ultimately responsible for the suicide of his friend and also on the need for academia responsible´s to make changes in order to provide support for those researchers “suffering from mental health problems”. Of course e may have had “contaminated” his paper with non-scientific related comments but he had a very good reason to do it. Fortunately the editor was also wise enough to approve that option. Also his warning makes perfect sense because the literature about mental problems and creativity is abundant (some papers below). He did not mention it but he didn´t need to because its widely known that in academia there are a special kind of mentors that as Leonid Schneider put it in one of his posts do believe that the duty of postdocs is to translate their bright ideas in form of high quality papers. Not to mention those mentors coordinating large paper mills to whose content its virtually impossible they had made a relevant contribution. Or those that as John Ionnadies have put it have a track of excellency in the "slave trade of younger researchers". http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0895435616001475

It does not really matter what are the scientific breakthroughs that can be attained by academia if the cost is a background of corrupted practices and a trail of corpses.
