October 2006 PhD Studentships in Plant
Science & Microbiology at the John Innes Centre

The John Innes Centre has excellent research facilities and a distinguished
reputation for basic and applied research along
multidisciplinary themes. The Centre forms a dynamic, stimulating and
friendly environment for PhD training amongst a
thriving research community. Students are registered for their PhDs with the
adjoining University of East Anglia which has a
lively academic, social and sporting student life. We have studentships
available for October 2006 in our two PhD programmes
listed below. Selected students will be invited to the Institute in December
or they will be interviewed by telephone. Travel costs
will be covered.

4 Year Rotation Studentships
This prestigious PhD programme attracts outstanding applicants, both UK and
International, who show potential for research at
the highest level. Special features of the Programme include three research
rotations in the first year and a general empowerment
of student choice in the selection of both research topics and supervisors.
Students can gain experience from a wide range of
experimental approaches from plant and microbial genetics, genomics and cell
biology through to molecular biology, biological
chemistry and computational biology before choosing a PhD project. Up to six
studentships are available.
Other PhD Studentships
We are also inviting applications for the PhD research areas listed below.
We expect to have more than 10 BBSRC funded
studentships available including several CASE awards. These are open to UK
and EU nationals. For eligibility and funding details
please see our web site. The studentships can be funded for up to 4 years.
You can apply for both programmes simultaneously.
Prof Tracy Palmer: Protein transport in bacteria
Dr Ane Sesma: Fungal pathogens in cereals
Dr Stephen Bornemann: Starch biochemistry
Prof Mark Buttner: Antibiotic production in
Streptomycetes
Dr Giles Oldroyd: Plant-mycorrhizal symbiosis
Dr Mary Byrne: Genetic regulation of leaf patterning
Dr Richard Morris: Computer modelling of cell signalling
Prof Cathie Martin: MYB-like regulatory genes in moss
Prof Andy Maule: Host-plant-virus interactions
Dr James Brown: Fungal pathogens in cereals
Prof Mervyn Bibb: Antibiotic production in
Streptomycetes
Dr Lesley Boyd: Fungal pathogens in cereals
